Mesothelioma pathology is the study of your tissue under a microscope. It is how doctors confirm what type of cancer you have.
A pathologist examines cells from your biopsy and writes a report.

A 2011 study in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology found that in around 20% of cases, the cell type given from the initial biopsy did not match the cell type after they performed surgery.
That's around 1 in 5 pathology reports that were wrong.
Most hospitals see only a few cases each year. Some see none. Your pathologist may have never seen this cancer before. Under a microscope, it can look like lung cancer, ovarian cancer, or lymphoma.
In 2019, a study found that about 1 out of 7 mesothelioma diagnoses may be wrong.
That means for every seven patients, one of them may not have mesothelioma at all. If you are that one, the results are serious. You could get treated for a cancer you do not have.
